Cocaine is the primary drug threat to the state of Florida. Cocaine is coming in from both South America and Mexico. Much of the cocaine brought in from South America is then shipped throughout the US and Canada. Florida is also a main entry point for Heroin throughout the Eastern states of the US, although Florida itself does not have a substantial heroin problem. Methamphetamine and meth labs are a growing problem throughout the state. MDMA is the most readily available dangerous drug throughout the state. The number of indoor marijuana farms has increased over the past few years and has becoming a growing problem. Prescription drug abuse is also quickly becoming a threat throughout the state.

 

The crime rate of Florida is 22% higher than the national average with about 85% of all crimes being property crimes.

 

Possession of 20 grams or less of marijuana is a misdemeanor punishable by up to 1 year in jail and a $1,000 fine. Sale or cultivation of 20 grams or less is also a misdemeanor carrying the same penalty as possession. If the sale takes place 1,000 feet from a school or other public area it is considered a felony and carries up to 15 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. Anyone who is convicted of a marijuana related crime will lose their drivers license for a period of 6 months to 2 years.

 

Every day the police will make roughly 230 DUI arrests and 300 drug arrests.

 

Every day the state of Florida will lose about 15 residents to alcohol related death and 3 to illegal drug overdose.
