Drugs and Alaska: The Icy Reality

Alaska has a population of 722,718 people, making it one of the most sparsely populated states. The state capital of Alaska is Juneau, located in the southern tail of the massive state

Alaska has a great occurrence of the Native American population within its borders. And Native Americans, unfortunately, are one demographic prone to alcohol and drug problems. 10.7 percent of Native Americans suffer from sort of chemical dependence, compared to about 7 percent of other populations.

The punishment for drug possession in Alaska ranges from minor to severe. Possession of less than one ounce of marijuana in your home carries no penalty. Over an ounce to four ounces in your home is a misdemeanor and carries a penalty of a 90 day sentence and a $1,000 fine. Sale of less than an ounce of marijuana is a misdemeanor and carries up to a 1 year sentence and a $5,000 fine. The maximum fine for possession of marijuana near a school zone in Alaska is a whopping $50,000. Is that risk really worth it?

  • Methamphetamine is available in Alaska and comes from two different locations: labs existing within Alaska and  from the continental US. Cocaine is also obtained from the Continental US.
  • Marijuana remains the most abused substance in Alaska, followed up by prescription medications such as Oxycodone. Nearly 20 percent of Alaska residents between the ages of 18 and 25 had used marijuana in the past month when surveyed.

Other drugs and even alcohol do pose significant threats to the Alaska population. For example, 61 percent of the population of Alaska used alcohol in the past month. While that itself may be no cause to sound the alarm, take into consideration that 40 percent of Alaskans were binge drinking on a monthly basis between the ages of 18 and 25.

Designer drugs are also making a notable presence in Alaska life as well, as of recently. An illicit drug known as “Spice” or “K2” is among those that are enjoying a sudden popularity in Alaska. This drug is so dangerous that it causes delusions, seizures, heart palpitations and even, in some cases, death.
