Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome and Treatment

Have you heard of alcohol withdrawal syndrome? If you or a loved one suffers from alcoholism, it’s especially important that you understand what happens to an alcoholic when they quit drinking. Quitting drinking is always the healthiest choice for an addict the best chance for a happier and more hopeful life. However, alcoholics should only do so under professional supervision. At Drug-Rehab.org, we’ll help you find that supervision.

Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome Symptoms

When an alcoholic quits drinking, their body needs to wean off of a chemical dependency before they can re-introduced themselves to normal, whole-body health. In the meantime, they will feel sick and emotionally unwell. The more an alcoholic drank on a regular basis and the longer the alcoholic struggled with alcoholism, the more difficult the period of withdrawal may be. The alcoholic’s medical history also plays a role, as do any prior, unsuccessful attempts to quit in the past. If a patient has tried to quit and began drinking again, subsequent quitting periods may be more difficult.

Alcohol is actually one of the most dangerous addictions to quit without medical supervision. This is because some alcoholics experience symptoms such as seizures and heart palpitations. However, many alcoholics do not experience symptoms as severe as that. Nevertheless, they can experience any of the following:

  • Stomach pains
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Vomiting
  • Inability to sleep
  • Fatigue
  • Mood swings
  • Increased anxiety
  • Depressive thoughts

If you need help seeking out alcohol withdrawal syndrome treatment, look no further. Contact Drug-Rehab.org and we’ll match you or your loved one with treatment that works.

Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome Treatment

There are many treatment options for individuals wanting to quit drinking and get through withdrawal safely. Some options even accelerate the process or lessen the severity of the symptoms. In order to match an alcoholic with the right type of treatment, we’ll ask a few questions. At the end of the referral sessions, we may recommend any of the following:

  • Inpatient treatment
  • Outpatient treatment
  • Group therapy
  • Private therapy
  • Medicated therapy
  • Prescription-free treatment
  • Educational programs

The treatment we recommend may combine more than one of these facets. Some inpatient therapies, for example, eventually transition to outpatient therapy. Some programs allow patients to cleanse their bodies of alcohol without resorting to prescriptions while others give medication to help ease the symptoms. Some patients do better in inpatient therapy and some can only make the time for outpatient therapy.
