Over half of the people who said they used prescription drugs for non prescription reasons in a 2006 SAMHSA survey said they obtained the medication for free from a friend or relative. Of those who had obtained the medication from a friend or relative 80.7% said their friend or relative had received the medication from one doctor.
1 in 5 people said they obtained the medication from one doctor. 3.9% of people had bought prescription medication from a stranger and 0.1% ordered off the internet. Many start using prescription medication at 22.9 years of age.
